psyche
The mind's totality
The psyche is the human mind or soul—the totality of mental and emotional life.
Psychology and psychiatry take their names from this concept.
In casual use, psyche often means someone's mental state or emotional makeup: The trauma affected her psyche deeply.
To psych someone out is to intimidate them mentally; to psych yourself up is to prepare mentally for a challenge. (Capitalized Psyche is a figure from Greek mythology.)
