transference
Shifting feelings elsewhere
Transference is the act of moving something from one place, person, or situation to another: the transference of power, the transference of funds between accounts.
In psychology, transference specifically refers to redirecting feelings about one person onto another—especially when a patient unconsciously projects emotions about a parent or past figure onto a therapist.
This therapeutic sense has spread into general use: His anger at his boss was really transference from his relationship with his father.
