intentionality

Acting on purpose

Intentionality is the quality of being deliberate or purposeful—acting with intention rather than by accident or reflex.

In philosophy, intentionality has a technical meaning: the capacity of mental states to be *about* something, to point toward objects or states of affairs.

A belief is about something; a desire is for something.

This directedness distinguishes mental phenomena from mere physical events.
