pathology
Science of sickness
Pathology is the study of disease—its causes, mechanisms, and effects on the body.
A pathologist examines tissue samples and performs autopsies to diagnose illness.
More broadly, pathology refers to the features of a disease itself: the pathology of Alzheimer's.
Figuratively, pathology describes any condition viewed as diseased or dysfunctional: the pathology of addiction, the pathology of political extremism.
