self-report

State about yourself

Self-report describes information that comes directly from the person being studied or assessed, rather than from external observation or measurement.

In research, self-report questionnaires ask subjects about their own behaviors, feelings, or experiences: The study relied on self-reported alcohol consumption.

The method is practical but vulnerable to bias—people may misremember, exaggerate, or give socially desirable answers.

As a verb, to self-report is to provide such information: Participants self-reported their symptoms.
