pathos
Evoking tender sorrow
Pathos is the quality in something that evokes pity, sadness, or tender sympathy.
A story's pathos might come from a character's suffering or loss: The pathos of the final scene left the audience in tears.
In rhetoric, pathos is an appeal to emotion rather than logic or credibility.
The word sometimes carries a hint of excess—emotion that feels manipulative or overwrought.
