phobia

Deep-seated aversion

A phobia is an intense, irrational fear of something specific—heights, spiders, enclosed spaces, public speaking.

The fear is disproportionate to actual danger and often recognized as unreasonable by the person experiencing it.

As a suffix, -phobia forms words for particular fears (claustrophobia, arachnophobia) or, more loosely, aversions and prejudices: homophobia, xenophobia.
