bracketing

Shots at extremes

Bracketing is the act of placing things within brackets or, more often, establishing upper and lower limits that contain something between them.

In artillery and photography, bracketing means taking shots above and below a target to find the optimal range or exposure.

Figuratively, to bracket is to group things together or set them aside: Let's bracket that issue for now.

The term also appears in philosophy for suspending judgment about whether something is real.
