cells

Bodies' building blocks

Cells are the basic structural units of living organisms—microscopic compartments containing genetic material and the machinery for life.

A single-celled organism is one cell; humans contain trillions.

Cell also means a small room, especially one for confinement: a prison cell, a monk's cell.

The word extends to small enclosed spaces or units within larger structures: the cells of a honeycomb, a battery cell, a terrorist cell.

In computing, a cell is an intersection of row and column in a spreadsheet: Enter the formula in cell B7.
