endocarditis
Infected heart interior
Endocarditis is inflammation of the inner lining of the heart, particularly affecting the heart valves.
It is usually caused by bacterial infection, though fungi or other microorganisms can also be responsible.
Bacteria typically enter the bloodstream through dental procedures, surgery, or intravenous drug use, then colonize damaged or abnormal heart tissue.
Symptoms include fever, fatigue, and heart murmurs.
Left untreated, endocarditis can cause serious complications including heart failure and stroke.
