electron microscopy
Beam-based magnification technique
Electron microscopy is a technique for examining extremely small structures using beams of electrons rather than light.
Because electrons have much shorter wavelengths than visible light, electron microscopes can resolve details far tinier than optical microscopes allow—down to individual atoms.
The two main types are transmission electron microscopy (TEM), which passes electrons through thin samples, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), which bounces electrons off surfaces to create detailed three-dimensional images.
