cellulitis

Deep skin infection

Cellulitis is a bacterial skin infection that spreads beneath the surface, causing redness, swelling, warmth, and pain.

It typically enters through a cut, crack, or insect bite and can spread rapidly if untreated: The doctor prescribed antibiotics for the cellulitis on her leg.

Not to be confused with cellulite, which is dimpled fat tissue.
