medical examiner
Death cause investigator
A medical examiner is a physician, usually with forensic pathology training, who investigates deaths that occur under unusual or suspicious circumstances.
Unlike a coroner, who may be an elected official without medical credentials, a medical examiner determines cause of death through autopsy and scientific analysis: The medical examiner ruled it a homicide.
