hyperplasia

Too many cells

Hyperplasia is the abnormal increase in the number of cells in a tissue or organ, causing it to enlarge.

Unlike hypertrophy, where existing cells grow larger, hyperplasia involves actual cell multiplication.

The condition can be benign or precancerous: The biopsy revealed endometrial hyperplasia.

Hyperplasia may result from hormonal stimulation, chronic irritation, or other factors that trigger cell division.
