osteomyelitis

Bacterial marrow invasion

Osteomyelitis is infection of bone, usually bacterial, causing inflammation, pain, and potential bone destruction.

The infection may reach bone through the bloodstream, spread from nearby tissue, or enter through wounds or surgery.

Treatment typically requires prolonged antibiotics and sometimes surgical removal of infected bone: The diabetic ulcer led to osteomyelitis in his foot.
