carcinoma

Malignant tissue growth

Carcinoma is a cancer arising from epithelial tissue—the cells that line organs, glands, and body surfaces.

Most cancers of the breast, lung, colon, and skin are carcinomas.

The word is medical terminology, more specific than the general term cancer: The biopsy revealed a squamous cell carcinoma.

Plural: carcinomas or carcinomata.
