motion
Formal parliamentary proposal
Motion is movement from one place or position to another: the motion of the planets, set the wheels in motion.
A motion is also a formal proposal put to a vote: She made a motion to adjourn.
To motion is to direct with a gesture: He motioned me over.
In law, a motion is a request to a court for a ruling.
Go through the motions means to do something perfunctorily, without real engagement.
