causality

Why things happen

Causality is the relationship between cause and effect—the principle that events occur because of preceding events.

In philosophy and science, causality addresses how and why things happen: The study examined causality between smoking and lung cancer.

Establishing causality requires showing that one thing actually produces another, not merely that they occur together.

Correlation does not imply causality.
