crane

Tall wading bird

A crane is a large, long-legged wading bird known for its graceful neck and elaborate mating dances.

The bird's shape inspired the name for lifting machines—tall structures with long arms used to hoist and move heavy loads: Construction cranes dominated the skyline.

To crane is to stretch one's neck for a better view: She craned her neck to see over the crowd.

A crane shot in film moves the camera on such a device. (Capitalized Crane is a surname.)
