Raising hand respectfully
Saluting is acknowledging someone with a gesture of respect or greeting.
The military salute—raising the hand to the forehead—is the most formal version: The private stood at attention, saluting the officer.
But saluting extends to any respectful acknowledgment: We're saluting the volunteers who made this possible.
A ship salutes by firing guns; a flag salutes by being dipped.
