motions
Proposals needing seconds
Motions are movements, whether of bodies, body parts, or objects through space.
The word often implies purposeful or directed movement: She made a motion toward the door.
In formal settings, a motion is a proposal put forward for discussion or vote: The motion to adjourn was seconded.
To motion is to direct someone with a gesture: He motioned for us to sit down.
The phrase go through the motions means to do something mechanically, without genuine engagement or enthusiasm.
