tabling

Putting off indefinitely

Tabling means putting something on the table—but which table determines the meaning.

In American English, to table a proposal is to set it aside, postponing discussion indefinitely: They tabled the motion until next quarter.

In British parliamentary usage, tabling means the opposite—introducing something for immediate consideration: The MP tabled an amendment.

Context usually clarifies which action is meant.
