war
Nations in combat
War is conflict using weapons between military forces or other groups with arms.
Any particular instance of this is also called a war, such as the civil war in Syria or the Crimean War.
Governments often use war to describe a campaign whose aim is to stop a particular undesirable thing, such as the war on drugs or the war on poverty.
War is also a verb that means engage in war.
It appears most often in the participle and gerund warring: Warring factions conducted raids on each other’s camps.
