pit
Peach's hard center
A pit is a hole or indentation, often very large and/or serving a particular purpose (gravel pit, barbecue pit), sometimes unpleasant (the pit of hell).
A lower area near a stage may be called a pit (orchestra pit, mosh pit).
A pit is also the seed of some fruits, and this accounts for some verb use; if you pit cherries, you remove the seed.
A pitted surface has many small indentations.
To pit one against another is to set them at conflict.
