tonnage
Freighter's cargo measure
Tonnage is a measure of the size or carrying capacity of a ship, expressed in tons.
The term extends to any calculation of total weight or capacity: The bridge has a tonnage limit of forty tons.
In broader use, tonnage refers to the total amount or quantity of something measured by weight: Coal tonnage has declined steadily since the 1990s.
The word also appears in contexts involving fees or duties calculated by the ton.
