biomass
Ecosystem's organic weight
Biomass is organic matter considered as a source of energy or a quantity to be measured.
In energy contexts, biomass refers to plant materials and animal waste that can be burned or converted to fuel: The power plant runs on biomass.
In ecology, biomass is the total mass of living organisms in a given area: measuring the biomass of phytoplankton in the ocean.
The word treats living things as undifferentiated material—tons of stuff rather than individual creatures.
