end grain
Cut timber's rings
End grain is the surface of wood exposed when cut across the grain, perpendicular to the fibers—what you see at the end of a log or board.
It absorbs stain and finish differently than face grain, often appearing darker.
End grain cutting boards, made from vertical wood blocks, are prized for durability and knife-friendliness: The end grain shows the tree's annual rings.
