quartersawn

Cut through center

Quartersawn describes lumber cut so the annual growth rings meet the board's face at roughly a right angle—achieved by sawing the log into quarters first, then cutting planks from each quarter.

This method produces wood that's more stable, less prone to warping, and shows a distinctive straight grain pattern.

Quartersawn oak displays prominent ray flecks prized in furniture making: The quartersawn white oak gave the tabletop its characteristic tiger stripe figure.
