gleaning

Picking up scraps

Gleaning is gathering what remains after a harvest—the leftover grain, fruit, or vegetables that harvesters missed or left behind.

Historically, gleaning was a right of the poor, permitted to collect from fields after the main crop was taken.

The word extends to any careful gathering of scattered bits: gleaning information from old letters, gleaning insights from interviews.

The emphasis is on patient collection of small amounts that others overlooked.
