Gold weight system

Troy weight is a system of measurement used for precious metals and gemstones, where a troy ounce equals about 31.1 grams—heavier than the standard avoirdupois ounce.

Jewelers and bullion dealers quote gold and silver prices per troy ounce: Gold closed at $2,000 a troy ounce.

The system takes its name from Troyes, a French market town. (Capitalized Troy is the ancient city.)
