pennyweight
Troy ounce fraction
A pennyweight is a unit of mass used in weighing precious metals and gemstones, equal to 24 grains or one-twentieth of a troy ounce—about 1.55 grams.
The term survives from medieval English currency, when a penny weighed this amount.
Jewelers and gold dealers still quote prices per pennyweight: Gold scrap at $45 per pennyweight.
