knot

Tied cord loop

A knot is a way of securely joining two strings, ropes, cords, or the like.

When something is knotted, either a knot has been tied in it or it is tangled as if this were the case.

Other kinds of knots include a whorl pattern in wood that marks where a branch connected, or a local, hard swelling of tissue: You have a knot in your forehead where you bumped into the door.

Knot is also a unit of nautical speed, equal to one nautical mile per hour; 20 knots is twenty nautical miles per hour.
