cable
Braided steel rope
A cable is a member of a class of things like string, rope, cord, or wire.
Cable is distinguished typically by being thick, multi-stranded, and usually metallic.
Cables may carry current, so even smaller ones get this name if they have this function, like the one that connects you cable TV.
In the old days, to cable something was to send it by telegraph; such messages were also called cables.
Today, cabling something is more likely to mean connecting it with cables.
