modem
Internet connection box
A modem is a device that converts digital signals to analog and vice versa, allowing computers to communicate over telephone lines or cable systems.
The word blends "modulator" and "demodulator." Early modems connected to the internet via dial-up, producing distinctive screeching sounds; modern cable and DSL modems are silent and far faster.
The technician installed a new modem to fix our internet connection.
