guy-wire

Mast steadying cable

A guy-wire is a tensioned cable used to stabilize a tall structure by anchoring it to the ground at an angle.

Radio towers, telephone poles, and circus tents rely on guy-wires to prevent swaying or collapse under wind or other forces.

The cables typically extend outward from various points on the structure to anchors set in the ground at some distance from the base.

Also spelled as one word: guywire.
