stay

Linger in place

Stay has two sets of interrelated but distinct senses.

To stay is like the opposite of go; that is, to remain in a place rather than leave it.

To stay fit, calm, or alert is to remain in those states.

A stay is the period of time you are at place, not leaving it (short hospital stay).

A stay is also the stopping of a legal proceeding or execution as ordered by a court.

The second stay is a support that stabilizes something, like a collar stay that stiffens the collar of a shirt.

To stay something is to stabilize it.
