strand
Single hair fiber
Strand is two different words with their associated meanings.
The first is the strand that is something long and thin, usually one among many such things (strand of hair, strand of DNA).
Things that are woven together to make something are called strands, and this meaning is extended figuratively: The strands of work, family, and community in her life were strong.
The second strand is the land near water.
To strand someone literally is to drive them onto a strand.
In more common use, to strand someone is to leave them in a difficult or helpless situation.
