internet
Connected computer systems
An internet is any network of interconnected computer networks—multiple separate networks linked together to communicate.
Before the global network dominated, the term described various interconnected systems: The company built an internet linking its regional offices.
The word is now rarely used in this generic sense. (Capitalized Internet is the global network.)
