broadcasting

Sending signals widely

Broadcasting is the transmission of audio or video content to a wide audience through radio, television, or the internet.

The term comes from agricultural scattering of seeds—casting broadly rather than in rows—and retains that sense of dispersal to many recipients at once.

A broadcaster sends; viewers or listeners receive.

The word also applies to spreading information widely: He was broadcasting our business to everyone who would listen.
