art history
Paintings through time
Art history is the scholarly study of visual arts across time and cultures—examining paintings, sculpture, architecture, and other forms in their historical contexts.
The field analyzes how artworks were made, what they meant to their audiences, and how styles evolved.
An art history course or degree typically covers major movements from ancient to contemporary.
Someone in art history works as a curator, critic, or academic.
