artifact
Dig site discovery
An artifact (artefact in British English) is a product of human effort.
In most uses of the word, the product is intentional: The archaeologists discovered artifacts from an ancient civilization.
A more limited technical meaning is for something resulting from human effort that was not the thing sought or intended, but instead a side effect: Wastage is an artifact of the dilapidated distribution system.
