literary history
Books through time
Literary history is the study of how literature develops over time—tracing movements, influences, and changing forms across periods and cultures.
It examines how writers respond to predecessors and contemporaries, how genres evolve, and how social conditions shape what gets written and read.
The course covered the literary history of the American South.
The term also refers to works in this field: a literary history of the Victorian novel.
