painting
Framed gallery piece
Painting is the act of applying paint to a surface, whether for art or utility.
A painting is the resulting work—typically pigment on canvas, paper, or wood: The museum acquired a new painting.
The word covers both the activity (She took up painting in retirement) and the art form as a whole (Dutch painting of the Golden Age).
House painting and similar practical applications share the word but rarely the prestige.
