triptych

Hinged art trio

A triptych is a work of art—typically a painting or carved panel—divided into three sections, often hinged so the outer panels fold over the center.

The form originated in religious altarpieces, where the central image was flanked by related scenes.

The term now applies to any three-part artistic work: The director conceived the films as a triptych exploring immigration.
