Romanesque

Round-arched medieval style

Romanesque describes the style of European architecture and art that flourished from roughly the 10th to 12th centuries, characterized by thick walls, round arches, sturdy pillars, and barrel vaults.

The style preceded Gothic architecture and drew on Roman building traditions—hence the name.

The cathedral's Romanesque facade features heavy stonework and semicircular arches.

The term extends to sculpture and painting of the same period.
