fresco

Wet plaster art

Fresco is a technique of painting on freshly applied wet plaster, so that the pigments bond with the wall as it dries.

The word comes from Italian for "fresh." Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel ceiling is the most famous example.

By extension, fresco refers to any painting made this way: The church contains several Renaissance frescos.

Plural: frescos or frescoes.
