Bering Sea
Alaska's western ocean
The Bering Sea is a marginal sea of the North Pacific Ocean, lying between Alaska and Siberia.
It connects to the Arctic Ocean through the Bering Strait.
The sea is named for Vitus Bering, the Danish explorer who navigated it in 1728.
Known for treacherous weather and rich fisheries, it appears frequently in discussions of commercial crab fishing: The boats headed into the Bering Sea for king crab season.
