Northern Sea Route
Siberian coastal shipping
The Northern Sea Route is the shipping lane along Russia's Arctic coast, connecting the Atlantic and Pacific oceans through waters north of Siberia.
Once frozen year-round, warming temperatures have made it navigable for longer periods, attracting commercial interest as a shorter alternative to the Suez Canal for Europe-Asia shipping: The tanker completed the Northern Sea Route in record time.
