Land-surrounded water bodies
Lakes are large bodies of water surrounded by land, distinguished from ponds mainly by size—though the line is imprecise.
Lakes can be freshwater or saline, natural or artificial.
The word extends to any pool of liquid: a lake of blood, a lake of molten lava.
Lake also names a reddish pigment made from dye and metalite compounds.
