Red Sea

Arabia-Africa waterway

The Red Sea is a narrow body of water between northeastern Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, connected to the Mediterranean via the Suez Canal and to the Indian Ocean via the Gulf of Aden.

In the Bible, Moses parted the Red Sea to allow the Israelites to escape Egypt—though scholars debate whether the Hebrew refers to this sea or a "Sea of Reeds" elsewhere.

The name may come from seasonal algae blooms that tint the water reddish.
